- Removable Cockpit Autopilots For Tiller Steered Yachts. Invented by Autohelm in 1973, tiller pilots have consistently been the world' s most popular pilot ever since, setting the standard for performance, reliability and ease of use. AutoTack lets you handle the sheets while the pilot tacks the boat and AutoSeastate intelligently keeps the boat on course while conserving power.
Raymarine is still making the Autohelm autopilots. Contact them for a manual and any necessary information regarding this model. The Model 2000 is a little light for a boat as heavy as the W32, but by mounting the autopilot well forward on the tiller, you can get enough mechanical advantage, but not much travel for any quick turns. Autohelm 2000 Autopilot
I have an old A2000 tillerpilot - the one consisting of a cylindrical tiller actuator and a separate 'pot' shaped control box with a rather charming twistable compass rose on top.
The thing has stopped working. All I've checked so far is that it is getting power in from the 12v plug, but I notice that where the power cable enters the bottom of the pot, the core cables are visible (i.e. the outer covering of the cable has pulled back) which makes me suspect that I've strained the cable at some time and may have pulled a connection out. Before I consign the whole issue to the skip, I'd like to get inside the pot and check it out.
However, there's no obvious means of opening the pot. There is a bottom and a top half, which seem to sandwich an O ring, but they don't show any inclination to unscrew one from the other.
Has anyone on the board ever opened one of these up, and if so, how?
